Ora Cogan's music is alchemical: partly instinct, partly ritual, and always conjured from the borderland where life feels most intense. With Hard Hearted Woman, she blends haunted folk, psych rock, and a shadowy form of country, building a realm where catharsis feels lush, mystical, and life-necessary. Shaken by the tone of modern life, Cogan gathered a circle of like-minded musicians and created an album shaped by someone who has stared into the abyss and time and again chosen curiosity.
Hard Hearted Woman emerged from a haze of cold baths, long swims in the river, late-night conversations with friends about art and politics, and long car rides through the rural landscape around Lillooet to visit her godmother. Alongside her band and guests from both country and experimental music worlds, she recorded with David Parry (Loving) at Dream Club in Victoria, British Columbia, as well as in her studio in Nanaimo and remotely with Tom Deis. The result glows like something drawn from smoke and seawater — intimate, shimmering, and shaped with as much wit as sorrow. It's a swirling, jewel-toned tribute to all angels and demons.
As a work marked by devotion to mystery, community, and the strange power of creating art in a fractured world, Hard Hearted Woman is an album about toughness and resilience; it's the shell we develop so our most human and fragile selves can survive. Hard Hearted Woman is for everyone trying to stay open, even when the world makes it feel impossible.
Bergslagsdiagonalen
Prepare for an evening of much reality, introspection, and a little nostalgia, all presented in a warm embrace of timeless country rock from Hisingen.
This autumn, Bergslagsdiagonalen will hit the roads to spread the gospel that is their new album: Lundby Lady. On the album, the band continues to draw from the two wells that never seem to run dry as inspiration: togetherness and everyday life. The album offers autobiographical journeys through the associational life of Sweden, interspersed with the feeling of being too boring to be remembered and fears for the future. In Bergslagsdiagonalen's world, no effervescent descriptions of the newly in love person's tingling stomach are offered. Here, love is rooted in the knowledge that the only thing that endures is everyday life, and then it's a matter of holding tight to those who haven't grown tired of you after many long winters without either sun or snow.
